Vision is the act or power of seeing. It is a unique sense by often taken for granted yet is one of the most complex and important functions of our bodies. As we go through life, our bodies change, and one or more of our senses may deteriorate, be affected by diseases/infection, or damaged from trauma….including vision. Two of the more common conditions that affect vision are Macular Degeneration and Cataracts. Fortunately, for cataracts, there is a safe and reliable surgical procedure to correct that condition. For advanced age-related macular degeneration, however, it remains a leading cause of irreversible blindness and visual impairment in the world.

Our vision support formula was designed to include the supplements well studies and found to be effective in lower the risk of developing advanced macular degeneration. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is a major clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute, one of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health. From this study, the American Academy of Ophthalmology now recommends the use of the AREDS formulation to reduce the risk of advanced AMD. [1]

How does CBD have a role in vision support? Research has been done and is ongoing regarding this. Some studies have demonstrated retinal inflammation and degeneration are caused by oxidative stress, and that CBD is anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective by inhibiting these events. [2] In other vision disease states, such as diabetic retinopathy, a study demonstrated that CBD treatment reduces neurotoxicity and inflammation, which may involve inhibition of p38 MAP kinase, which has been implicated in the pathology of many tissues including the eyes. [3]

The effects of CBD on glaucoma are not clear. CBD tested in MICE demonstrated a potentially negative effect with CBD in cases of glaucoma. It should be noted, this study used CBD drops directly into the eyes. More research in humans is needed to more fully understand the effects, if any, of CBD taken systemically, and how it relates with glaucoma.
